Introduction to Zimux
Zimux brings a desktop-style Linux terminal to Android without forcing you to root your phone. It combines a real PTY terminal, an optional Ubuntu userland, and practical file and development tools in a modern Material 3 interface.
Linux Tools in Your Pocket
Run interactive programs such as vim, htop, less, and tmux, install Ubuntu packages with apt, and work with files in shared storage from one app.
Real PTY and Multiple Tabs
Each tab runs an independent terminal session with escape-sequence support, shell job control, scrollback, copy and paste, pinch-to-zoom, and an extra row for keys missing from most Android keyboards.
Ubuntu Without Root
The proot environment provides an Ubuntu userland where package management works and you appear as root inside the guest, while leaving the Android system untouched. Shared storage is available at /sdcard.
Bundled Command-Line Toolkit
BusyBox, proot, 7-Zip, GNU tar, cpio, XZ, Zstandard, and Brotli are available directly on the Zix Terminal path, so common shell and archive tasks work immediately.
Integrated Utility Suite
Switch between a file manager, archive browser, syntax-aware code editor, web browser, image viewer, PDF viewer, HTML viewer, APK installer, and background task manager.
Choose the Right Environment
| Environment | Root | Best for |
|---|---|---|
| Zix Terminal | No | Fast access to the Android shell and bundled native tools. |
| Ubuntu proot | No | A complete Ubuntu userland with apt and fake-root isolation. |
| Ubuntu chroot | Yes | Real root access to Android paths such as /data. |
For most users, Ubuntu proot is the safest starting point. Its first setup downloads an Ubuntu base image of approximately 80 MB.
